The gentleman-hooligans of the early days of rugby wore dress shirts and trousers. But the shirt tails were too easy to grab onto. So they were replaced by collared wool jumpers. But wool stretched too much during the game. So, finally, rugged cotton shirts with a stiff gentleman's collar became the go-to uniform on the pitch.
