A Year of SOUND⚡WAVES / Vol #12

A Year of SOUND⚡WAVES / Vol #12

A whole year of SOUND ⚡ WAVES. Damn. It's hard to even write about without feeling like yer writing in the cool girl's yearbook on the final day of grade 10. Popping a squat in the chemistry hallway, desperately looking for a blank space on a page. Tryna write what you wanna say without sounding like cheesy or taking up too much space. Tryna say that "it's been an awesome year", that you'll "never forget it", that "next year's gonna be even better, yo!"

But honestly, when DJ Waves came to us a year ago with the idea of releasing playlists for free spirits on Spotify we were immediately onboard. Music has always been an integral part of the Steeltown universe and Waves seemed to always know what direction to go in sonically.

With this 12th Volume of SOUND WAVES, she's put together an unceremoniously rad compilation of some truly funky and forgotten tracks. From the mid 60's avant-garde rock of Jack Nitzsche to brand-spanking-new Iggy Pop. With some Shuggie Otis, Nancy Sinatra, Francois Hardy, James Brown, Steppenwolf, Lalo Schiffrin, Isaac Hayes, Brigitte Bardot, and Janko Nilovic thrown in for good measure.

The SOUND⚡WAVES First Year Archive:

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 1 | LISTEN NOW
Featuring Black Pistol Fire, The Picturebooks, Tito & Tarantula, The Raconteurs, Johnny Cash, The Monks & more, SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 1  is a downward spiral of swampy rock riffs, sandpaper vocal tracks and old school emotive blues chords that will inspire you to raise total hell.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 2 | LISTEN NOW
Curated and compiled by our good friend and rock 'n' roll wild child DJ Waves, SOUND⚡WAVES Volume 2 from Steeltown Garage Company is a distorted rabbit hole of screaming guitars, deafening drums and thundering vocals all wrapped up in a face-melting candy coating of pop-tinged, old school rock n roll attitude.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 3 | LISTEN NOW
Drenched and dripping with Tarantino'esque swagger, this compilation of obscure, exotic and at-times disorienting rock and roll is just about the coolest playlist in the Spotify'verse. Featuring The Cramps, Nancy Sinatra, Leo Dan, The Stooges, Guantanamo Baywatch, The Detroit Cobras and more.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 4 | LISTEN NOW
Caught somewhere between a mid-summer acid trip on a wind swept surf break and an endless night in front of the juke box neons at a local dive bar, Volume 4 is a tiki cocktail of plugged-in twang, beachy synths, black magic bass riffs and dreamy distortion. Featuring Tame Impala, The UFO Club, Night Beats, Jacuzzi Boys, Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Tijuana Panthers, The Growlers, Lana Del Rey and more!

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 5 | LISTEN NOW
Two cities, both alike in dignity  but different in sound. Very fuckin' different. Detroit and NYC have been embroiled in a seemingly endless geographical battle of the bands since the 60's, and the war has produced some of the most epic names in the house of rock. The Stooges (Detroit) and The Ramones (NYC). Jack White and Blondie. The Four Tops and The Velvet Underground. MC5 and The New York Dolls. The list goes on. And the music is bloody incredible.

In Volume #5 of SOUND⚡WAVES, DJ Waves walks us through the decades-long battle, alternating each song between Detroit and New York City. And in the process paints an illuminating picture of the sounds of each city. Which city has the better bands? The slickest guitar riffs? The heaviest drums? The most timeless songwriting? You decide.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 6 | LISTEN NOW
This is not a halloween playlist. Yes, it was released in October. And yes, it's chock full of spooky tracks that'll raise the hairs on the back of yer neck. But if you're looking to practice your Thriller choreo or sing along to The Ghostbusters Theme, keep on scrolling... this is not the playlist for you.

Curated by our girl DJ Waves and packed with downright witchy vocals, guitar licks that scream like bloody murder, drums that'll get your heart pumping, Deep South front porch stomps, and a hellish overtone so palpable, so ominous, yet so fricken cool that you'll consider selling your heavenly soul to the dark side in exchange for a life of moody rock clubs, black magic voodoo and old leather jackets with all the zippers on them, late nights with questionable company, and a taste for blood and dark rum served neat.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 7 | LISTEN NOW
SOUND⚡WAVES Volume 7 is like nothing you've ever heard. It's deep. It's rich. It's eye opening. And it's wild. You won't understand most of it. But that's fine. Neither do we. SOUND⚡WAVES 7 is a testament to the fact that music transcends borders,  languages, religions, philosophies and ideals. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, our delusion that we have some privileged position depending on where we live, where we born, are all challenged in this carefully curated, travel-inspiring compilation of rad tunes.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 8 | LISTEN NOW
It was mid-December. We had all spent weeks being bombarded by Band-Aid, trying not to listen to the annoying din of holiday pop in shopping malls, being driven to the point of near-madness by an endless barrage of Bublé, Carey, Bieber, Ariana and a steady, water-torture-like drip of sleigh bell samples.

When our pal DJ Waves said she wanted to curate a Christmasy playlist without any actual Christmas music on it, we were in. Here, in Volume 8 of SOUND⚡WAVES, you'll be able to enjoy tunes that stoke that festive spirit without making you want to bear claw your ears off the side of your head.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 9 | LISTEN NOW
Our girl DJ Waves compiled this amazing 9th volume of SOUND⚡️WAVES for all those looking to turn over a new leaf in style, for those who need a good ol’ fashioned rock n roll push to get to the end in January, but also for those who just wanna grab a stool at the bar order a double and throw up a middle finger to whole 'New Year, New You' farce.

Featuring Jane's Addiction, New Order, The Modern Lovers, David Bowie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Jamiroquai, Iggy Pop, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog and more.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 10 | LISTEN NOW
DJ Waves takes us on whirlwind tour of love-soaked rock ballads, break-up anthems, sorrowful three-chord blues and everything in-between. So whether you're part of the modern lovers or the lonely hearts club, sit back for a while and dig into Sound⚡Waves Volume 10.

Featuring Richard Hawley, Amyl and the Sniffers, John Lee Hooker, Roy Orbison, Mando Diao, Mystic Braves, Lady Gaga, Liam Gallagher, Elle King, Dan Auerbach, The Marias, Tito & Tarantula and more.

SOUND⚡WAVES Vol 11 | LISTEN NOW
Pour yourself a drink and vibe out to SOUND⚡WAVES Volume 11. It's a fun mix of 70's prog rock, Peruvian surf tunes, classic ska, old-school hip hop, obscure dancehall tracks and some psychedelic chill wave for good measure. Turn it up. Let loose. And wash yer hands.

Thanks for a whole year of truly great tunes Waves! Keep on rockin' in the free world! To stay up to date or get in touch with DJ Waves, check out her official website or give her a follow on the ol' Instagram.

The Bikeriders: The 1960s photography that inspired the film

The Bikeriders by Jeff Nichols and starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Norman Reedus, has been entertaining audiences for months now. But many people are surprised to hear that the film was actually inspired by a 1968 photo series by American photographer and filmmaker Danny Lyon.

Natsukashii - a vintage Japanese Kayōkyoku playlist by Steeltown

Definitely our strangest playlist yet. Before Japanese Idols and J-Pop there was Kayōkyoku. A genre of music influenced heavily by western rock and roll and usually had easy to follow melodies, sentimental narratives and straight forward lyrics designed to be relatable to the everyday Japanese person.
