A COMMITMENT TO CANADA 🇨🇦
Design: We designed the Canadian Crewneck right here, in-house, at Steeltown Garage Co, inspired by crewneck sweaters from the 80's and early 90's.
Knit: We knit the fabric at Great Lakes Knitting in Brantford, Ontario. Once a massive knitting operation in the 80s, Great Lakes has now downsized considerably in response to the surge of off-shore garment production.
Dye: After knitting, the fabric was rolled and sent to family-owned and operated Ajax Textiles in Ajax, Ontario which has been a leader in the Canadian garment industry since 1954.
Cut & Sew: The Canadian Crewnecks were cut and sewn at Pro Stitch Garment Services in Scarborough, a Certified B Corp company meeting the highest standards of transparency, employee treatment and supply chain practices.

FABRIC-FIRST, AS ALWAYS
We were determined to stay true-to-vintage, which meant we needed a heavyweight 450gsm cotton that was French terry instead of fleece.
Nowadays, fleece is everywhere. But back in the 80s and 90s, crewneck sweaters were more often made out of French terry, a looped fabric that is way more breathable and has a far superior next-to-skin feel.
Of course, this meant that we had to develop and knit the fabric from scratch. So our Canadian Crewnecks feature a one-of-a-kind heavyweight French terry that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

STITCH PERFECT
So after we perfected the fabric, we began researching heritage and vintage workwear stitching techniques that focused on hard-wearing durability.
For the shoulder and armhole seams (where rips and blowouts usually occur), we wanted the toughest stitch out there: the heralded over-seam "flatlock" stitch. Instead of a single needle stitch holding the two pieces of the pattern together, the flatlock stitch straddles both pieces on the outside of the garment for maximum reinforcement.
And for stitches that don't require such heavy-duty reinforcement, we opted for a heavy-hitting triple-needle stitch which can be see in all it's glory fixing the 2x1 ribbed collar on the outside of the crewneck.
